The Tammy Behind the Blog

Who is the Tammy Lenski behind this blog? That’s what I’ve been asked by several folks who’ve tagged me in an interesting meme circulating right now. The meme invites bloggers to talk a bit about who they are and what’s important to them, revealing a bit about their own lives for their readers.

What’s most important to me, in addition to the work I share with you here?

My Partner: My Man from the Midwest, Rod, and I have been together 18 years this month. We met at a jazz festival and married 7 years later. He’s a college professor of political science. As I looked through our photo collection, I realized just how often one or the other of us is behind the camera, so opted for this formal shot when, for once, we were both in front of the lens a the same moment!

My Family: This is a shot of the four Lenski siblings, from eldest on the left to youngest (me) on the right. My folks are long gone and I miss them, particularly my mom, who was one of my best friends.

My Friends: I tend to have strong, long bonds with friends. My longest friendship is with my best friend from kindergarten, Lisa (that’s her below on the right). On the left is Laurie, part of our high school trio. We still have “women only” weekends at least once a year.

Animals: I’ve written various articles here that involved my dogs and cats in some way, so this probably doesn’t surprise you. I care a great deal about animals outside my home, too. I’ve been a vegetarian for 24 years and here’s a dog I met, and still remember fondly, when I went to Gulf region to help with pet rescue after Hurricane Katrina.

Getting Away: I love the natural world and I like to completely unplug and get away into it to rejuvenate. Our photo albums are filled with hiking, kayaking, camping, cycling, marathons and other trips. Here’s one Rod took of me on a camping and hiking trip to northern Wyoming a few years ago.

My Home: Home is my sanctuary, a place I treasure both for who’s in it and the peacefulness it brings to my heart. Here’s an early spring sunrise view from our porch.

Many of the folks I would have tagged have already done wonderful sharing, including Phil, Dave, Lisa and Dawud. I thought Liz had, but can’t find it. And I’d love to learn a bit about Christine Kane; the Mentor Mom Jill Urbane; and Life 2.0’s Nick. For a list of who’s participated at the time I gathered the list, scroll down.

Tammy… it’s cool to get a glimpse of the Tammy behind the blog. Thanks for letting us see the non-mediator Tammy.

  2. Hi Tammy

Thank you for the little peek into your life. Then, of course, as I’m reading your blog post, you phone me. So it was even better to speak with you. Thanks.

I did go and listen to your audio intro. I loved it. It’s a similar idea to something I’ve been scripting for my site. I think it’s great to hear the voice behind the blog as well as see the face.

  3. Dave, thanks for stopping in!

Dawud, there’s nothing like a little synchronicity in one’s day, eh? It was great to chat with you and I’m headed to listen to that Bill Gates/Steve Jobs conversation right now…

  4. Lisa Gates says:

Hi Tammy! Lovely to see all that nature and love of animals. I have the same dilemma in our household: I’m the photographer, so I generally can’t find a good photo to share when I need one…

  5. Lisa, it’s funny you should say that about the photos. I so loved the “hats” photo on your site and kept going back to it, then looking at the very formal one I’d selected for here, saying to myself, “I want one that’s as fun as that…I know we have fun like that…why don’t we have any photos like that?” :)

  6. Love your pictures Tammy. Thanks for sharing them with us, especially the one with your friends where you have some great 80s hair! AWESOME!

I’m usually the photographer too, so the only way I get good pictures of me is if I hold the camera and shoot it of me and another person. I’ve been working out, so my arms are now abnormally long. It’s totally worth it!

  7. Phil, I had 80s hair before it was the 80s, with all these curls. I just recently told my hairdresser he should cut it short again because it was creeping dangerously close to 80s hair! My mother used to tell me I looked like the “wild woman of Borneo.” I think she never intended it is a compliment but at the time I rather liked the idea. :)

I think that holding the camera out toward me is definitely going to take practice. I always manage to leave out one half of my face.

  8. Wild woman of Borneo? That doesn’t sound so bad to me :)

Yeah, taking picture with your arm hanging out takes some practice. It’s far from perfect, but at least that way you get proof that you were at the event :)

    Happy snapping.

  9. What did you think of the videos? Isn’t it interesting to consider how different their minds works (Steve Jobs & Bill Gates)?

  10. Karen Putz says:

Wow, what a beautiful place you live in!

  11. Nick Smith says:

Thank you Tammy for inviting us into your beautiful home and life. It is so reflective of you.

I will do the ‘taggy’ thing… but in a little. ;-)

  12. Nick Smith says:

Thank you Tammy for inviting us into your beautiful home and life. It’s very reflective of you.

I’ll do the ‘taggy’ thing… bit in a little while. :-)

  13. Hi Tammy,

Thanks for joining in! Great pictures too.

I’ll add you to the original list of participants now.

  14. Nick, thanks for your willingness to pick up the tag. And David, I gather you’re the originator of this fine idea…thank you for your creativity and interest in real connection with people.

  15. You’re very welcome, Tammy.

I’ve linked my name to the original post where you can see a link to your welcomed post.

I hope you enjoy the weekend!

  18. Rory says:

It’s lovely to get a look at some of the friends and family in your life, Tammy.

I very much like the advice and help that you offer, and to get a glimpse at the personal you was a real treat. Thank you.
